May in the Garden

A roundup of jobs for the garden this month.

April has been very wet and May is rumoured to be heading the same way.  But there are still things to do in the garden if we have a dry day! Here is a short list of those jobs.

1. If cutting hedges this month, keep an eye out for bird nests hidden deep inside.  Take a look before you get the clippers out.

2. Keep tying in climbing plants to their supports, especially with this stormy weather.

3. Weeds are starting to come through so pluck them out or hoe them off before the seeds set.  There is a good saying to remember  ‘one years seed, seven years weed’ so get rid of them early.

4. Start adding in feed to any planting that you do, such as Bonemeal or Blood, fish and bone, to aid good root growth and flower.

5. Don’t be tempted to cut off any bulb leaves after flowering yet, if you cut them off you will lose the goodness from that bulb for the next year.
